Burgruine Kohren
Frohburg, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Kohren, located in Kohren-Sahlis near Frohburg in Saxony, Germany, is a medieval castle ruin originally founded around the 10th century by King Heinrich I as a Slavic defense site and later owned by the noble Lords of Kohren from the late 12th century.
The fortress, featuring a rare pair of prominent defensive towers—one from mid-12th century and the other shortly after—along with ring wall remnants, was destroyed in 1220, rebuilt by 1240, and abandoned as a residence by the early 15th century after the family's demise, leading to its decay and quarrying for materials.
Today, the striking twin towers dominate the town skyline as its iconic landmark, accessible to visitors amid a history of multiple owners like the Schönburg and Plauen families.
