Burgruine Löwenstein
Bad Zwesten, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Löwenstein is a partially reconstructed medieval hilltop castle ruin above Oberurff-Schiffelborn in Bad Zwesten, Hesse, Germany, completed around 1236 by Werner II von Bischoffshausen as a Thuringian landgrave's fief.
First documented in 1253, it once featured a large outer bailey, higher main castle with five residences, a chapel from around 1300, and a 26-meter bergfried tower accessed via a high entrance and drawbridge, all enclosed by a 450-meter ring wall with defensive features like battlements.
Declining after the 16th century with gunpowder's rise, it now offers hikers on the Kellerwaldsteig a climbable tower for panoramic views over the Urff Valley and beyond, with remnants including a vaulted cellar and planned excavations.
