Burgruine Montfort
Hallgarten, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Montfort is a medieval spur castle ruin located 3 km northwest of Hallgarten in Germany's Rhineland-Palatinate, perched on a 280-meter forested hilltop between Hallgarten and Duchroth overlooking nearby military roads.
Built around 1240 by the Counts of Veldenz to control strategic routes, they appointed Eberhard von Lautern as vassal; his family took the name "von Montfort" in 1247 and held it until 1432, though it later became a robber baron base and was destroyed in 1456 by forces of the Archbishop of Mainz and Elector Friedrich I.
Well-preserved remnants include outer bailey walls, gatehouse, bergfried foundations with a climbable 9-meter tower and observation platform via 34-step spiral stairs, two three-story residential towers, cistern house foundations, and a small museum displaying medieval ceramics, glass, iron artifacts, and architectural finds from 1937-1939 and 1977-1984 restorations now maintained by Bad Kreuznach district.
