Burgruine Neu-Morungen
Sangerhausen, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Neu-Morungen, located near Morungen (a district of Sangerhausen in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany), is the substantial ruin of a late-Romanesque hilltop castle built in the 13th century on a prominent ridge about 100 meters above the village.
Constructed as an imperial fortress after the abandonment of the older Alt-Morungen site around 1200, it featured a mighty bergfried tower (now a 10-meter stump), extensive ring walls roughly 140 meters long, ditches, and earthen ramparts, serving as a strategic stronghold that changed hands among nobles like the Counts of Mansfeld.
By the 16th century it had fallen into decay and remains a rugged hiking attraction today, historically linked (though debated) to the famous minnesinger Heinrich von Morungen.
