Burgruine Neukastel
Leinsweiler, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Neukastel near Leinsweiler in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is a 12th-century imperial hill castle built around 1123 by the Salian dynasty on a prominent sandstone rock at 459 meters to guard the valley entrance to the Reichsburg Trifels, offering clear sightlines to nearby fortresses like Madenburg and Scharfenberg.
First mentioned in Emperor Heinrich V's documents tied to Heinrich von Neukastel, it became a Reichsburg in 1246 under King Konrad IV, passed through hands like the Falkensteins, Speyer bishops, and Pfalzgrafen via partitions and pledges, suffering damage in the 1525 Peasants' War and Thirty Years' War before French troops razed it in 1680 during the War of the Palatine Succession.
Today, scant remnants like wall fragments, a neck ditch, rock chamber, and an observation platform persist on the crag, with the former estate at its base rebuilt as the Neukasteler Hof in 1828, serving as a hiking viewpoint over the Southern Wine Road.
