Burgruine Questenberg
Südharz, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Questenberg in Südharz, Germany, is a medieval spur castle ruin built around 1200-1250, likely by the Counts of Beichlingen, overlooking the Nasse River valley near Questenberg village in Mansfeld-Südharz.
First referenced in 1275 via a knight named Fredericus de Questenberg, it passed to the Counts of Hohnstein in 1305, was explicitly named in 1349, and frequently changed hands through pledges among Thuringian landgraves, the von Witzleben family, and Counts of Stolberg by 1430.
Never captured despite sieges, it saw final military use in 1633 against Harz militias, lay deserted by the Peasants' War, and by 1649 held only usable cellars; today, remnants include a round bergfried tower stump, walls, gate, moats, and late medieval graffiti in the tower basement depicting tools, symbols, and scenes.
