Burgruine Ramburg
Ramberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Ramburg, perched at 444 meters on Schlossberg hill above Ramberg in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, was constructed in the mid-12th century as a Staufer imperial castle to protect nearby Trifels Castle, first documented in 1163 as the seat of Reichsministeriales like Hartlieb von Ramberg.
Owned by the von Ramberg family until Hans sold it to the Dalbergs in 1519, it was razed in the 1525 Peasants' War, struck by lightning in 1560, rebuilt by Löwenstein counts, plundered in the Thirty Years' War yet used as an Amtssitz until 1638, then quarried in the 18th century.
Featuring a wohnturm-like Oberburg with massive shield wall, rock-hewn basement, Vorburg, and Halsgraben, it was restored in 1971 and 1980s despite some inaccuracies, now accessible via Ramberg trails with views over the Pfälzer Wald.
