Burgruine Rauhenstein is a castle ruin located in Baden bei Wien, Lower Austria, dating back to the 12th century. It was originally built by the Knights of Tursen and played a key role in securing the Helenental valley alongside Rauheneck Castle. The castle has experienced destruction and rebuilding several times through its history, including damage during Turkish invasions.
The ruins feature three-story tall stone walls, a 20-meter-high tower, and remnants of rooms and defenses, offering visitors panoramic views of the town of Baden and the surrounding countryside. The site is popular for hiking and photography, and nearby is the Villa Rauhenstein, a 19th-century building formerly owned by composer Hugo Wiener.
The castle is also known historically as the place where Karl van Beethoven, nephew of Ludwig van Beethoven, attempted suicide in 1826.
