Rauschenberg, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Rauschenberg is a medieval hilltop castle ruin located above the town of Rauschenberg in Hesse, Germany, likely constructed in the 11th or 12th century under Fulda Abbey and first documented in 1219.
Expanded into a palace between 1594 and 1597 for Hessian landgraves, it suffered plunder by Swedish forces in 1639 during the Thirty Years' War and deliberate destruction in 1646 by Hessian-Kassel troops, with further dismantling around 1830.
The pentagonal site at about 250-367 meters elevation retains defensive walls, a bergfried tower foundation, gates, a neck ditch, and remnants of residential buildings, accessible via paths for visitors exploring its military past.
