Burgruine Rauterburg
Diex, Austria, Austria
Burgruine Rauterburg is a small medieval castle ruin in the Carinthia region of Austria, located near the town of Diex above the Lavant Valley.
It is thought to date back to the Carolingian period, roughly the 9th–10th centuries, and was once held by the powerful Counts of Heunburg before they shifted their main seat to Haimburg.
The castle lost its importance over time and in the 19th and 20th centuries large parts of the structure were dismantled, with much of the stone later used for road construction, so today only fragmentary remains of a single building with four uneven rooms are still visible on the site, with almost no finer architectural details preserved.
Despite its modest state, the ruin is of historical interest as a relic of early medieval noble power in southern Austria and is now privately owned by the Helldorff family.
