Verified Burgruine Ruttenstein

Niederhofstetten, Austria, Austria

Burgruine Ruttenstein is the large, well-preserved ruin of a high medieval hill castle in Upper Austria, standing about 3.5 km northeast of Pierbach in the district of Freistadt, on a wooded, isolated hill at 758 m above sea level in the village of Niederhofstetten, between the valleys of the Große and Kleine Naarn.

The fortress was probably built in the 12th century and first mentioned as castrum Rotenstein in 1160, with its earliest written record in 1209, and it was founded by the Clam‑Velburg counts, later passing to the Capellen, the Liechtensteins, the Meggau, the Dietrichsteins, and finally to the Dukes of Sachsen‑Coburg‑Gotha from 1823, who still own it today.

Once one of the largest fortifications in Austria, the complex covers about 4,800 m², with a forecourt of roughly 3,200 m² and a main castle of about 1,600 m², defended on the north and east by natural rock faces and on the south and west by a ring wall with seven semi‑shell towers, and its still-visible remains include a four‑sided Romanesque residential tower with double windows, a pentagonal keep, parts of a chapel, the palas, and extensive ramparts.

After a fire in 1594 and lightning damage, the castle gradually fell out of use as a residence and decayed, but since the 19th century it has been protected and partially restored, and today the ruin is freely accessible, with a wooden staircase leading up the tower to make it a small viewing point, and it is a popular hiking destination that can be reached on a short walk from Pierbach.
