Burgruine Schönstein is a ruined Romanesque spur castle located on a western spur of the 419-meter Schlossberg in Schönau, part of Gilserberg in Germany's Hesse region within the Schwalm-Eder-Kreis and Naturpark Kellerwald-Edersee.
Likely built in the 12th century by the Counts of Ziegenhain to control the Gilsa Valley road, it was first documented in 1350, expanded by Johann I in 1358, and served as the Amt Schönstein administrative seat over 14 local villages until 1543.
The site features remnants of a 20x36-meter plateau with a deep neck ditch, defensive ditches, and a three-story 20x9-meter palas (main building), repeatedly destroyed in conflicts like the Sternerkrieg (1371/72) and later sieges before falling into decay.
