Burgruine Senftenberg
Senftenberg, Austria, Austria
Burgruine Senftenberg is a historic castle ruin located in Senftenberg, Lower Austria, perched 271 meters above sea level on cliffs overlooking the town and the Krems Valley.
The site has been a fortification since before the millennium, with the castle itself first mentioned in 1197 as the property of Karl von Gutrat. Throughout its history, it was controlled by various noble families, including the Wallseers and Schaunbergs, and served as a refuge during the Turkish invasions in 1529.
The castle was conquered and destroyed by Swedish troops in 1645, after which it remained a ruin. In 1717, Emperor Charles VI granted the Senftenberg dominion to the Counts of Starhemberg, who still own the ruins today. The renovated grounds invite visitors to enjoy panoramic views, Gothic architecture, and walking paths that highlight the castle's medieval heritage and scenic surroundingsBurgruine Senftenberg.
