Burgruine Steinenschloss
Thaleischweiler-Fröschen, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Steinenschloss near Thaleischweiler-Fröschen in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, is one of the Pfalz's oldest hilltop castles, constructed around 1100 by the Counts of Leiningen on a 295-meter rocky spur above the Schwarzbach and Rodalb river confluence for strategic valley oversight.
Destroyed possibly by Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in 1168 alongside nearby Saarbrücken fortresses and never rebuilt, it featured a massive 13.5-meter-diameter round tower—likely a bergfried or wohnturm—a geknickte shield wall, Vorburg with drawbridge, and Oberburg living quarters reached via rock-hewn passage.
Excavated since 1896 with major post-WWII efforts by 1973's Burgverein Steinenschloss, now featuring reconstructed gates, restored walls, and medieval finds like gilded bronzes displayed locally, it serves as a hiking landmark.
