Burgruine Strahlenburg
Schriesheim, Germany
Burgruine Strahlenburg near Schriesheim, Germany, was initially built around 1235 by Conrad von Strahlenberg on land owned by the monastery of Ellwangen. The construction was initially illegal but was later permitted after a financial agreement with the monastery.
The castle served as a defensive stronghold and a means to collect taxes and tolls. It underwent expansions in the 14th century, including the construction of a Gothic residential building with a knights’ hall.
The castle experienced conflict and changed ownership multiple times during the tumultuous 14th and 15th centuries. In 1470, it was captured by forces loyal to the Elector of Heidelberg, leading to the loss of municipal rights for Schriesheim. The castle suffered major damage from fire and war around the early 1500s and was partially demolished by 1733, with its bricks repurposed for village defenses.
Today, only ruins remain, including a 30-meter-high donjon, and the site houses a restaurant with picturesque views over Schriesheim and the Rhine plain. The castle remains a historic landmark and has inspired artists and writers over the centuries.
