Burgruine Tannenfels
Dannenfels, Germany
Burgruine Tannenfels is a medieval hill castle ruin situated above the village of Dannenfels in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It was originally built as a motte-and-bailey castle in the 13th century and first documented in 1330 when Count Philip of Sponheim-Bolanden-Dannenfels and his wife endowed a chapel there.
The castle belonged to the lords of Bolanden and later to the counts of Sponheim and Nassau-Saarbrücken through inheritance and transfer. Around 1368, the family seat moved away from the castle, and during the Palatine Peasants' War in 1525, the castle was completely destroyed by rebellious peasants and subsequently dismantled. Today, only a few remnants remain, such as parts of a tower, supporting walls, and a castle well, with the site offering scenic views of the surrounding Palatinate forest and Rhine valley.
The castle chapel once served the local village congregation, though no church remains today.
