Burgruine Ulmen
Ulmen, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Ulmen is a historic castle ruin towering above the volcanic Ulmener Maar crater lake in Ulmen, Germany, within the Eifel region's Cochem-Zell district of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Dating back to around 1074 AD with possible Roman settlement foundations, it expanded in the Middle Ages into a grand complex of upper and lower castles linked to the town walls, home to knightly families like the Knights of Ulmen who repelled attacks until devastating assaults by Louis XIV's forces in 1673 and later wars left it ruined.
Today, preserved wall remnants, a cistern, and outer bailey foundations form a scenic public park offering hikes and views over the maar's turquoise waters, blending volcanic geology with medieval heritage.
