Burgruine Veringen
Veringenstadt, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Veringen in Veringenstadt, Germany, is a medieval hilltop castle ruin built around 1100-1130 by Count Marquard von Veringen on a rocky ridge encircled by the Lauchert River, first mentioned in 1134 as a strategic high fortress above the town and St. Nikolaus church.
Expanded circa 1200 with rusticated masonry and a heated residential tower, it passed to the Counts of Württemberg in 1344, underwent repairs in 1464 and 1487, but gradually decayed after serving as a quarry until conservation from 1978-1983 and further city-led restoration in 2014 secured its towers and walls.
Fully accessible and free to explore, the site integrates with the town's defenses and preserves the intact late-Romanesque St. Peter Chapel—likely predating the castle—with 1515 frescoes by local artist Peter Strüb, offering panoramic Swabian Alb views.
