Burgruine Vetzberg
Biebertal, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Vetzberg is a prominent hilltop castle ruin on the 310-meter Vetzberg basalt peak in Vetzberg, part of Biebertal municipality in Hesse's Gießen district, Germany, about 1.5 km northwest of Burg Gleiberg.
Built around the mid-13th century as a secondary stronghold of the Counts of Gleiberg and first mentioned in 1226 as the "Vogtisburg," it housed up to 34 noble Ganerben co-owners notorious as robber barons until the 1495 Eternal Land Peace ended their raids.
The site features a 22.7-meter Romanesque bergfried tower with three vaulted floors and a 1935 entrance (original accesses higher up), the palas gable wall, ring wall remnants, and lower bailey traces; owned by Biebertal since 1970, it serves as an accessible viewpoint after ongoing renovations.
