Burgruine Wallenstein
Knüllwald, Germany
Burgruine Wallenstein is a medieval hilltop castle ruin located in Knüllwald, Germany, built probably in the 12th century by the abbey of Hersfeld to control the surrounding territory.
It sits on a steep spur with natural defensive slopes on three sides and was originally a powerful fortress. The castle belonged to the knights of Wallenstein until their line ended in 1745. It was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War in 1637 and never rebuilt but has been preserved as a ruin. Today, the site is part of a camping area with a natural swimming pool nearby and hosts medieval reenactments.
The ruins, overlooking a scenic valley, serve as a backdrop for cultural events and outdoor activities like hiking and fishing, making it a popular destination in the region.
