Burgruine Wartenberg

Burgruine Wartenberg is the remains of a small hilltop castle perched on a flat rocky spur at about 268 meters above sea level above the Lauter River near the village of Wartenberg‑Rohrbach in the Donnersbergkreis of Rhineland‑Palatinate, Germany.

It was built around 1220 on what was then called the Wartenbachhügel by the local noble family that later took the name Wartenberg, and it originally consisted of a bergfried and an inner ring wall with associated buildings serving as a modest regional stronghold.

The castle was destroyed in 1265 during a feud between the Abbot of Fulda and the Count of Ziegenhain and was never rebuilt, leaving only low stone remains that were later partly used as a quarry before being recognized as a historic monument.

Today the ruins are freely accessible, with some wall fragments and a restored tower section still visible, and they are appreciated as a small but atmospheric medieval site embedded in the wooded landscape near the Lauter valley.
