Burgruine Weißenstein
Marburg, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Weißenstein near Marburg, Germany, is a ruined medieval rock castle built around the 13th century on a quartz ridge known as the Pfahl at about 758 meters elevation.
It was originally constructed by the counts of Bogen and later controlled by the Dukes of Bavaria and the noble Degenberg family, who rebuilt it after it was burned down in 1468. The castle endured several attacks, including destruction by Swedish forces during the Thirty Years' War in 1633 and was finally destroyed in 1742 by the troops of Franz von der Trenck.
Since then, the castle has remained in ruins, though the official residence and farm buildings have been restored. The site offers panoramic views of the surrounding German and Czech countryside and serves as a cultural heritage landmark with occasional events held there, preserving its historical and architectural significance in the region.
