Burgruine Wildenstein
Dannenfels, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Wildenstein is the remains of a small hill‑top castle built on a 486‑meter‑high spur in the Wildensteiner Tal, hidden in woodland on the southern slopes of the Donnersberg near the village of Dannenfels in the Donnersbergkreis of Rhineland‑Palatinate, Germany.
It was a spur‑type castle whose main approach side lay to the west, protected by a deep ditch and a shield‑like wall across the neck of the spur, and it originally formed part of a cluster of fortifications around the Donnersberg known as the “Donnersberg‑burgen” ring.
The castle is believed to have been built in the 13th century and was likely destroyed or at least left in a ruined state during the Thirty Years’ War, with records already describing it as a ruin by 1657, and later archaeological work uncovered items such as crossbow bolts and medieval building fragments.
Today only modest remains of the outer wall, parts of the keep, and traces of inner buildings are visible, but the site is freely accessible and marked by information boards that explain its history, making it a small but atmospheric medieval ruin in a scenic forested landscape.
