Burgruine Winneburg
Cochem, Germany, Germany
Burgruine Winneburg is a 13th-century castle ruin perched on a steep ridge about 4 km northwest of Cochem in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, overlooking the Endert Valley and Moselle River at around 300 meters elevation.
Built around 1240 near a 12th-century predecessor seized by King Konrad III in 1151, it served as an imperial stronghold and customs post under Trier archbishops until French troops under Louis XIV burned and demolished it in 1689 during the Nine Years' War.
Never rebuilt despite brief 19th-century ownership by Metternich, the atmospheric remnants—including walls and towers—host summer knightly reenactments and offer hiking access with panoramic views of the scenic Eifel landscape.
