Verified Burgruine Wolfsberg

Sangerhausen, Germany

Burgruine Wolfsberg near Sangerhausen, Germany, was a medieval castle likely built around 1150 by the free knights of Wolfsberg.

The castle first appeared in records in 1169 and changed ownership multiple times, including the lords of Stein and the lords of Egloffstein. In 1383, it became part of the Bishopric of Bamberg and served as the seat of an episcopal administrative office. The castle was severely damaged during the South German War of the Cities in 1388 and later rebuilt around 1408.

It was destroyed again during the Peasants' War in 1525 and rebuilt in 1547, but by 1609 it had fallen into disrepair and was uninhabited. Further destruction occurred during the Thirty Years' War in the early 17th century. The Bavarian state took possession in 1803 and allowed it to fall into ruin; parts of the castle were dismantled and sold.

Today, only foundation remnants and earthworks remain, with no standing structures. The former castle site near the village hosts a guest house renovation of old buildings from 2019, serving as a welcoming spot for nature lovers.
