This coastal port at the Congo River estuary historically served as a slave trade embarkation point to Brazil and later thrived on timber, cocoa, and vast offshore oil reserves discovered in 1967, fueling Angola's economy while sparking separatist movements like FLEC advocating independence since 1975 amid ongoing low-level conflict post-Angolan Civil War.
