Calvörde Castle
Germany, Germany
Calvörde Castle is a medieval fortress in Calvörde, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, first documented in the late 13th century at the Ohre River crossing amid marshy Drömling forests, strategically positioned between Brandenburg, Magdeburg, and Brunswick territories.
Its circular upper ward featured a red-brick bergfried tower called "de rode Hinrik" with a dungeon, a three-story Gothic palas hall renovated in 1590 by Duke Henry Julius, armouries, chapel, and outer structures like a watermill, protected by river arms and a drawbridge.
Frequently contested by noble families like the Alvenslebens and von Schulenburgs, it suffered destruction in the Thirty Years' War and partial demolition by 1828, leaving scant remnants including vaulted cellars amid star-shaped 17th-century gardens.
