Cantelmo Castle is a medieval fortress perched above the village of Pettorano sul Gizio in Italy’s Abruzzo region.
Dating back to around the 11th century, it occupies a strategic hilltop position overlooking the Gizio Valley and the Peligna Valley, making it an important defensive stronghold throughout the Middle Ages. The castle is named after the powerful Cantelmo family, who expanded and strengthened the fortress during the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries.
Its most distinctive features include massive cylindrical towers, fortified walls, and an ancient pentagonal tower that is believed to be the oldest part of the complex. Today, the restored castle is one of the most important landmarks in the area and is open to visitors. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys while providing a fascinating glimpse into the feudal history and medieval architecture of Abruzzo.
