Verified Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden

Seattle, Washington, United States

The Carl S. English Jr. Botanical Garden in Seattle, Washington, spans 7 acres on the grounds of the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks.

Created by Carl S. English Jr., a botanist and horticulturist who worked there from 1931 until his retirement in 1974, the garden features more than 500 species and 1,500 varieties of plants from around the world, including fan palms, oaks, Mexican pines, rhododendrons, lilies, and a prominent fuchsia collection.

English transformed the garden from a simple grassy lawn used for military drills into an elaborate English-style landscape inspired by his travels and global seed exchanges, even bringing back the dawn redwood—once thought extinct—from China. The garden is recognized as a botanical masterpiece and a popular spot for visitors, offering a lush, diverse plant display overlooking the busy Ballard Locks and Puget Sound, embodying English’s lifelong dedication to plant variety and landscape beauty.
