The Carleton College Cowling Arboretum in Northfield, Minnesota, is an 800-acre natural area established in the 1920s by Carleton College President Donald J. Cowling and Professor Harvey E. Stork to serve education, conservation, and recreation.
Situated along the Cannon River, it features diverse landscapes including prairie, forest, and floodplain habitats, with some 10 miles of trails open to the public year-round. Originally envisioned as a landscape arboretum, it evolved into a multi-use preserve focusing on native ecosystem restoration and environmental education.
The Arboretum continues to be a living classroom and recreational space, maintained with strong involvement from college students and faculty.
