Carrara is a historic city in Tuscany, Italy, famous worldwide for its high-quality white marble quarried from the nearby Apuan Alps. Settlements in the area date back to the 9th century BC, with the Roman era marking the start of large-scale marble extraction. Over the centuries, Carrara experienced rule by various powers including the Bishops of Luni, the Republics of Pisa, Lucca, Florence, and the Malaspina family, eventually becoming part of the Duchy of Massa and Carrara.

The city played a notable role in labor movements and anarchism during the 19th century, especially among marble quarry workers. Carrara marble has been used historically by renowned artists like Michelangelo, who sourced raw marble here for his sculptures.
