Carrarese Castle (Castello Carrarese) is one of Padua’s most important medieval landmarks, built in the late 14th century by the powerful Carraresi family, who ruled the city.

The castle stands on the site of earlier fortifications and incorporates the famous Torlonga tower, which later became the Specola, Padua’s historic astronomical observatory. Originally designed as a military fortress and noble residence, the castle featured richly decorated rooms, painted towers, and an elevated passage connecting it to the nearby Carraresi Palace, the center of political power in medieval Padua.

After Padua came under Venetian rule, the castle gradually lost its defensive role and was later used as an observatory and prison. Restoration work has revealed important medieval frescoes and architectural details, making it a significant symbol of the city’s history and heritage.
