Cassero Senese, also known locally as the “Roccaccia,” is a medieval fortress located at the highest point of the village of Montelaterone in the province of Grosseto, Tuscany.

Built by the Republic of Siena around the 13th century, it was added to the village’s existing defensive system to protect this strategically important hilltop settlement. The fortress played a significant role while the area belonged to Siena, featuring strong defensive structures integrated with the village walls. After the region became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany in the 16th century, the castle lost its military importance and gradually fell into decline.

Today, visitors can see the restored ruins of its imposing stone tower, walls, and remains of internal structures, including a cistern. The site offers a fascinating glimpse into Tuscany’s medieval past and provides scenic views over the surrounding Monte Amiata landscape.
