Casteddu Etzu
Italy, Italy
Casteddu Etzu, also known as the Montiferru Castle, is a medieval fortress located on a hill near Cuglieri in western Sardinia.
Built in the late 12th century to defend the southern border of the Judicate of Torres, it later became part of the Judicate of Arborea before losing its military importance under Aragonese rule. Today, the castle survives as a ruin, with remnants of walls, towers, and underground structures overlooking the valleys and mountains of the Montiferru region.
It is closely linked to local legends and the dramatic story of Francesca Zatrillas, a noblewoman who sought refuge there in 1668 before fleeing Sardinia. The site is valued for both its historical significance and its spectacular panoramic views.
