Castel Capuano is one of the oldest castles in Naples, dating back to the 12th century when it was built by the Norman king William I.

Located near the historic route leading to Capua, it originally served as a fortified royal residence and later became an important palace for successive rulers, including Frederick II and the Angevin kings. In the 16th century, under Spanish rule, the castle was transformed into Naples’ main Hall of Justice, a role it maintained for centuries.

As a result, it became closely associated with the city’s legal and administrative history rather than military activities. Today, Castel Capuano remains a significant historic landmark, admired for its blend of Norman, medieval, and Renaissance architecture. Its long history as both a royal residence and judicial center makes it an important symbol of Naples’ political, legal, and cultural heritage.
