Verified Castel Delfino

Italy, Italy

Castel Delfino was a medieval fortress in present-day Liguria, near Pontinvrea, built in the late 12th century by the nobleman Delfino del Bosco.

It served as a strategic stronghold during the conflicts between Guelph and Ghibelline factions and was controlled at various times by powerful families and states, including the Del Carretto family, the Grimaldi family, and the Republic of Genoa. Because of its important position, the castle was frequently involved in regional power struggles.

After a series of battles and occupations, it was ultimately destroyed by Genoese forces in the 13th century, marking the end of its military role. Today, only a few ruins remain, but the site is still remembered for its historical significance and local legends connected to the noble families who once ruled the area. It offers a glimpse into the turbulent medieval history of Liguria and the rivalries that shaped the region.
