Castel dell'Ovo is the oldest castle in Naples and stands on the small former island of Megaride, overlooking the Gulf of Naples.

Its history stretches back more than two thousand years, from ancient Greek and Roman settlements to its later development as a medieval fortress under the Normans. The castle is famous for the legend that gave it its name, “Egg Castle.” According to local tradition, the Roman poet Virgil hid a magical egg within its foundations, and as long as the egg remained intact, both the castle and the city of Naples would be protected from disaster.

Over the centuries, Castel dell'Ovo served as a royal residence, fortress, treasury, and prison. Today, it is one of Naples’ most iconic landmarks, admired for its rich history, seaside setting, and spectacular panoramic views of the bay, Mount Vesuvius, and the city skyline.
