Castel di Pietra is a medieval castle ruin located near Gavorrano in Tuscany’s Maremma region.

Built on top of a rocky hill, it occupied a strategic position overlooking the Grosseto plain and the Metalliferous Hills, making it an important defensive and administrative stronghold during the Middle Ages. The castle was associated with several powerful noble families, including the Aldobrandeschi and the Pannocchieschi.

It is especially famous for its connection to the legend of Pia de’ Tolomei, the noblewoman mentioned by Dante in the Divine Comedy, who is traditionally believed to have died at the castle. Today, only ruins of the fortress remain, including portions of walls and towers uncovered through archaeological excavations. Surrounded by nature, Castel di Pietra is valued for its historical significance, dramatic setting, and panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside.
