Castel Goffredo
Italy, Italy
Castel Goffredo is a historic town in Lombardy's Mantua province with origins dating back to Roman times and a long history as a fortified settlement. During the Middle Ages, it was ruled by several powerful families before becoming closely associated with the Gonzaga dynasty, which shaped much of its political and cultural development. From 1444 to 1602, Castel Goffredo was an autonomous Gonzaga fief and one of the important centers of Gonzaga rule. The town was strengthened with walls, towers, and urban improvements, becoming a small Renaissance capital with an organized layout and notable noble residences. Today, Castel Goffredo preserves traces of its fortified past through historic buildings, towers, palaces, and sections of its former defenses. It is also known as the “city of stockings” because of its important textile and hosiery industry, which has contributed significantly to the local economy in modern times.
