Castel Grumello
Montagna in Valtellina, Province of Sondrio, Italy, Italy
Castel Grumello is a medieval castle located on a rocky hill above Montagna in Valtellina, overlooking Sondrio and the central Valtellina valley.
Built in the late 13th or early 14th century by the De Piro family, it occupied a highly strategic position that allowed control of important routes through the region. The castle is unusual because it consists of two separate structures enclosed within a common defensive wall: one served as a noble residence, while the other had a military function with a watchtower and fortifications.
This combination of residential and defensive architecture is rare in the area. Destroyed in 1526 during the Grisons' occupation of Valtellina, the castle survives today as a picturesque ruin with towers, walls, and foundations still visible. Managed and preserved by the Italian National Trust (FAI), it is a popular destination for visitors seeking medieval history, vineyard landscapes, and panoramic views of the Alps and Valtellina.
