Castel Menardo is a medieval castle ruin located on Colle Ciumina near the village of Serramonacesca in Italy’s Abruzzo region, close to the Majella mountains.

Built between the 12th and 14th centuries, it occupied a strategic position overlooking the Pescara Valley and mountain passes, helping protect the surrounding territory and the nearby Abbey of San Liberatore a Maiella. Although its exact origins remain uncertain, local traditions link the fortress to Charlemagne. Today, only parts of its walls and towers survive, but these remains still reveal the castle’s defensive design, which included a triangular layout with circular towers guarding key points.

The castle can be reached by a short hike through woodland and is appreciated for its historic atmosphere and spectacular views over the surrounding landscape. Its ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into the medieval history of Abruzzo and the region’s network of castles and monasteries.
