Castel Nuovo, also known as Maschio Angioino, is one of Naples’ most iconic landmarks.

Built in the late 13th century by Charles I of Anjou as a new royal residence, it became the political and cultural heart of the Kingdom of Naples and served as the seat of rulers from the Angevin, Aragonese, and Spanish dynasties. The castle is famous for its massive round towers, imposing walls, and magnificent white marble triumphal arch, which was added to celebrate Alfonso of Aragon’s entry into Naples in 1443.

Over the centuries, it hosted kings, artists, poets, and important historical events, making it one of southern Italy’s most significant medieval fortresses. Today, Castel Nuovo is a major cultural attraction housing museum collections, historic halls, and the Palatine Chapel. Its impressive architecture and central location near Naples’ waterfront make it a symbol of the city’s rich heritage and long history.
