Castel Roncolo, known in German as Schloss Runkelstein, is a medieval castle perched on a rocky outcrop near Bolzano in South Tyrol.

Built in 1237 as a fortress, it later became an elegant residence after being acquired by the wealthy Vintler merchant family in 1385, who expanded the castle and richly decorated its interiors. The castle is especially famous for its extraordinary collection of secular medieval frescoes, considered the largest and best-preserved of their kind in Europe.

These paintings depict scenes of courtly life, knightly tournaments, hunting, and famous legends such as Tristan and Isolde and King Arthur. After periods of decline, Castel Roncolo was restored in the late 19th century and later opened to the public. Today, it is one of South Tyrol’s most important cultural landmarks, offering visitors a vivid glimpse into the art, stories, and daily life of the medieval world.
