Castel San Zeno is the oldest part of the fortified town of Montagnana in the Veneto region of Italy.

Its origins date back to the medieval period, and the current fortress was largely developed in the 13th century after Ezzelino III da Romano conquered and rebuilt the town, creating the imposing keep that still dominates the skyline today. The castle was an important defensive stronghold and formed a key part of Montagnana’s famous city walls.

It featured towers, drawbridges, moats, and fortified gateways that helped protect the town during centuries of regional conflict. After the Venetian Republic brought greater stability to the area, the fortress gradually lost its military function and was adapted for practical uses, including troop accommodation and the storage of hemp, an important local product.

Today, Castel San Zeno is a major cultural landmark that houses museums and historical collections. Visitors can climb the 38-meter-high tower to enjoy panoramic views of Montagnana, its remarkably preserved medieval walls, and the surrounding countryside.
