Castel Terracena was a Norman fortress and royal residence built in Salerno between 1076 and 1080 by Robert Guiscard, one of the most important Norman rulers in southern Italy.

Constructed near the city’s eastern walls and close to the cathedral, it served both as a defensive stronghold and as the seat of Norman power after the conquest of Salerno. The complex was known for its impressive architecture, including fortified walls, towers, grand halls, and richly decorated interiors. It played an important role in medieval history, hosting members of the Norman and imperial courts and serving as a symbol of Salerno’s status as a major political center in southern Italy.

Although much of the castle disappeared by the 13th century, likely after earthquakes and later redevelopment, remnants of the complex can still be identified within Salerno’s historic center. Today, Castel Terracena remains an important reminder of the city’s Norman heritage and medieval past.
