Castelfraiano is the ruined remains of a medieval castle located on the summit of Monte Castelfraiano near Castiglione Messer Marino in Italy’s Abruzzo region.

Dating back to the 12th century, the fortress occupied a strategic hilltop position overlooking the sources of the Sinello and Treste rivers and important routes through the surrounding mountains. The castle’s main purpose was to monitor the historic Ateleta-Biferno sheep track and control access through the nearby valleys.

Its fortified enclosure had a trapezoidal layout with defensive towers and walls, making it an effective lookout and military post during the Middle Ages. Today, only ruins of the castle survive, but its dramatic location at over 1,400 meters above sea level offers spectacular views of the Abruzzo landscape. Castelfraiano remains an important reminder of the region’s medieval history and its traditional network of mountain fortifications.
