Castellaccio is a small hilltop village in the municipality of Livorno, Tuscany, known for its panoramic views over the Tyrrhenian Sea and the surrounding coastal hills.

The area takes its name from an ancient fortress known as Castel d’Oreto or the “Castle of the Ants,” which was likely built by the Republic of Pisa in the late 13th century, although the original castle has long since disappeared. Over the centuries, the site evolved into a residential and countryside retreat area, with villas, landscaped grounds, and later additions such as a neo-medieval tower.

Its elevated position has made it a popular viewpoint from which visitors can see the Tuscan coastline and, on clear days, islands such as Gorgona, Capraia, and even Corsica. Today, Castellaccio is appreciated for its natural beauty, historic atmosphere, and peaceful setting above Livorno. It serves as a scenic destination for visitors exploring the Tuscan coast and nearby attractions such as the Sanctuary of Montenero.
