Castello Baradello
Como, Italy, Italy
Castello Baradello is a historic hilltop fortress overlooking the city of Como and is one of the area's most important medieval landmarks.
Built on a site that had strategic importance since ancient times, the castle's earliest fortifications date back to the Byzantine era, while much of the surviving structure was rebuilt in the 12th century with the support of Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. The castle played a key role in controlling routes around Como and was involved in many political and military events during the Middle Ages.
It was later expanded by the Visconti family, but much of the complex was dismantled in 1527, leaving its impressive square tower as the most prominent surviving feature. Today, Castello Baradello stands within the Spina Verde Park and offers spectacular panoramic views of Como, Lake Como, the Alps, and the surrounding plains.
