Castello Brown
Italy, Italy
Castello Brown is a historic castle and museum perched on a hill above the harbor of Portofino in Liguria.
The site has been used for defense since Roman times and later became an important Genoese fortress protecting the coast and harbor from naval attacks. In 1867, the former military stronghold was purchased by British consul Montague Yeats Brown, who transformed it into an elegant private residence while preserving many of its historic features.
The castle remained in private hands until it was acquired by the municipality of Portofino in 1961 and opened to the public. Today, Castello Brown is one of Portofino’s most popular attractions, known for its beautifully maintained gardens, historic interiors, and spectacular panoramic views of the harbor, the Ligurian Sea, and the surrounding coastline. It serves as both a cultural landmark and a reminder of the region’s rich maritime history.
