Castello Caetani in Fondi is an impressive medieval fortress that dominates the town’s main square and is one of the most important historic landmarks in southern Lazio.

Construction began in 1319 under the powerful Caetani family, and the castle later became the setting for significant historical events, including the election of Antipope Clement VII in 1378, which marked the beginning of the Western Schism. It was also associated with the renowned noblewoman Giulia Gonzaga, who famously escaped an attack by the Ottoman corsair Barbarossa in 1534.

Today, the well-preserved castle houses the Civic Museum and is admired for its massive towers, medieval architecture, and panoramic views of the surrounding plain and mountains.
